A Candidate To Believe In!

Boyd White III is a candidate for the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s School Board and here’s why:

As a native of Detroit, son of working-class parents, and a Cass Technical High School graduate, Boyd knows Detroit – its history, challenges, and the transformational potential for its residents. As result, Boyd believes that Detroit can and should provide its hard-working residents with a world class educational system again.

Boyd White III believes:

Michigan’s current educational funding model must advance to meet the needs of the State. DPSCD is operating at a funding disadvantage compared to other districts in the State. The systemic disadvantage is from an outdated statutory funding formula that must be assessed and revised to align with the unique challenges and opportunities facing cities like Detroit.  This system should commit to making every effort to confront the problems and develop solutions that best represent and benefit the school district’s students, families, educators, and community. Boyd is committed to going to war to ensure that this current system is changed for the benefit of the District’s 50,000 students.

The Current State of Michigan Education Funding Model Must Be Replaced with a Model That Works for All.

A trusted and transparent relationship between all stakeholders responsible for and interfacing with our students, parents, and guardians is crucial for every issue and opportunity we face for their success.  By creating multiple communication platforms, we demonstrate our vested interest in the education of our children. Boyd is committed to utilizing this approach to remove barriers to foster trust, respect, and collegial relationships among all stakeholders.

DPSCD’s Parents, Teachers and Staff Must Be Respected and Heard

Chronic Absenteeism Must Be Reversed

As of 2023, sixty-six percent of the District’s 50,000 students miss at least 18 days per 180-day school year. The District must continue prioritizing and reversing chronic absenteeism to advance its potential with teachers, and community stakeholders including the families, churches, organizations, and others vested in the student success. Intentional student and parent engagement with the educational process is key to this issue. Boyd is committed to advocating for new and innovative ideas to reverse this trend.

A disproportionate number of the District’s students have been deemed eligible for an Individual Education Plan (IEP).  Unfortunately, the District has difficulty adequately serving these students due to funding constraints. Meeting them where they are, we must proactively serve all students. The District’s special needs students deserve every opportunity to learn and compete successfully, prioritizing and investing in their needs and Boyd is committed to making this happen!
